Volunteers are essential to our project
Our volunteers dedicate more than 55,000 hours a year to achieve our predator free mission. When we complete our project by 2030, we’ll have hundreds of trained volunteers, and thousands of households, watching for signs of rats. Find your local trapping group, read about our community heroes and learn below how you can volunteer to be a Community Ranger.
We need volunteer Community Rangers to be part of our project!
As a Community Ranger you will work in the greenspaces across Phase 2 of our project, helping to install, service and check devices. You can contribute anything from several hours a week, to several hours a month. We will fully train you to use traps and bait stations, and provide you with all the gear you need. If this sounds like something you are interested in, please sign up.
Once you’ve filled out this form, we will be in touch about the next training session – see you there!
We currently have two volunteer projects, with more in the pipeline:
The Mt Vic Town Belt reserve is in the southern section of Mt Vic. Community Rangers volunteering here help ‘knockdown’ predators. This important work helps our team who are clearing surrounding suburbs of Hataitai, Roseneath, Oriental Bay and Mt Vic. This project is led by the Mt Vic Vermin Trappers community group. They have years of trapping experience in the area and support the project as it moves through Phase 2.
Phase 2 buffer
The buffer is the first line of defence for our Phase 2 area. It includes over 730 devices installed at a high density which reduces the risk of reinvading rats, stoats and weasels from the west. It runs from Ōwhiro Bay up through the green belt to Mt Cook and through to the waterfront, marking the boundary of Phases 2 and 3. The buffer has five sub-projects led by community leads: Ōwhiro Bay, Tawatawa/Manawa Karioi, Berhampore Golf Course, Prince of Wales Park and the city centre. You can watch the Google Earth flyover video below for a view of the entire buffer system.
